The Chinese social media application TikTok has been shut down in the country in accordance with a law that anticipates a ban in the U.S. if it is not sold to an American company. It has been announced that the elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, is working to find a solution regarding the ban on the application, which has more than 170 million users in the country.
TikTok, which has been a topic of debate in the American public for a long time, was officially blocked in the U.S. just hours before the ban that will start on January 19. Users trying to access TikTok, which has more than 170 million users in the U.S., encountered a message stating, "Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable. A law banning TikTok has come into effect in the U.S. Unfortunately, you cannot use TikTok at this time."
TRUMP IS SEEKING A SOLUTION
In the continuation of the message, TikTok stated that the elected President of the U.S., Donald Trump, is working on finding a solution to the aforementioned ban. In his statement yesterday regarding the issue, President Trump mentioned that he was considering granting the company an additional 90 days to comply with the relevant law and avoid the ban.
THE SUPREME COURT HAD APPROVED THE LAW
The U.S. Supreme Court approved the implementation of the law that foresees the ban of TikTok in the U.S. unless it is sold, on Friday. The court stated, "Congress has determined that the sale of TikTok is necessary to address national security concerns regarding its data collection practices and its relationship with a foreign adversary."
According to the unanimously approved decision, if the social media application is not sold by January 19, when the decision will take effect, it will be removed from platforms like Google and Apple, and downloading the application on devices such as phones and tablets will be prohibited after that date.
