In a statement from the International Organization for Migration, it was reported that the boat, which was heading from the port city of Cap Haitien in northern Haiti to the Caicos Islands, caught fire. The statement stated that 40 migrants lost their lives in the tragedy, and it was also mentioned that a significant number of people were injured, some of them seriously.

In a statement from Haitian authorities, it was also reported that 37 people were rescued and that the condition of 7 people, who were in critical condition, was still being treated in the hospital.
