US President Donald Trump stated that he 'personally' approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, the perpetrator of the 2009 Fort Hood massacre, and the live broadcast of the process. The United Nations (UN), meanwhile, described the decision as "disgusting."
The US administration is in turmoil over the decision to publicly execute former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people and wounded 32 at Fort Hood Base in Texas. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the firing squad and live broadcast decision, and US President Donald Trump gave it his full support. Answering reporters' questions in the White House garden before his New York visit, Trump stood behind the decision.
TRUMP: I DON'T CARE HOW HE DIES
Stating that Nidal Hasan fully deserves the death penalty, US President Trump spoke clearly about the live broadcast decision. Responding to reporters' question, "Did you personally approve Nidal Hasan's execution to be broadcast live?", Trump said, "Of course I approved it. The man is a lunatic. I don't care how he dies, as long as he dies."
Hasan, who was sentenced to death by a military jury, is expected to be executed by firing squad on December 3.
DEFENSE SECRETARY HEGSETH: PEOPLE MUST SEE THE CONSEQUENCES
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who put forward the idea of broadcasting the execution live, defended the decision for a public execution and made the following assessment:
"We will ensure that people can watch this. The decision will be public. Because society needs to see with its own eyes just how serious the consequences of such grave crimes are."
FIRST IN US HISTORY AFTER A 90-YEAR GAP
If the decision is implemented, the US will witness a public execution for the first time since 1936. The last public execution in the country took place in 1936 in Kentucky, with the hanging of Rainey Bethea, a Black man convicted of rape.
REACTION FROM THE UN: DISGUSTING
The United Nations (UN) described the possibility of the American soldier named Nidal Hasan, who carried out an attack on Fort Hood Base in Texas in 2009, being publicly executed by firing squad as "disgusting."
