It has been claimed that US President Donald Trump continues to demand that the Saudi administration normalize relations with Israel as a condition for the nuclear agreement signed with Saudi Arabia in July to take effect.
According to a Wall Street Journal report citing an unnamed US official, Trump submitted the nuclear agreement signed between Washington and Riyadh on July 23 to Congress for review.
The official alleged that Trump has not abandoned the condition that Saudi Arabia normalize relations with Israel for the agreement to take effect.
NUCLEAR AGREEMENT SIGNED IN JULY
In a statement from the US Department of Energy on July 23, it was noted that Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud signed the peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement known as the "123 Agreement" along with an accompanying bilateral safeguards agreement.
The agreement in question establishes the framework for cooperation between the two countries in the field of civil nuclear energy.
TRUMP HAD REFERENCED THE ABRAHAM ACCORDS
US President Donald Trump had stated that the civil nuclear agreement signed with Saudi Arabia would be "conditional on the Riyadh administration joining the Abraham Accords."
The latest claim indicates that the Washington administration continues to evaluate nuclear cooperation with Saudi Arabia in conjunction with the process of normalizing relations with Israel.
AGREEMENT SUBMITTED TO CONGRESS
Under US law, the nuclear cooperation agreement must be reviewed by Congress. In this context, the agreement was transmitted by President Trump to Congress for review.
Following Congress's review process, the procedure for the agreement's entry into force will continue.
