U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of Turkey's role in Syria and his very good relations with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, stating, "He is a very strong and smart person."
The U.S. President said, "I have very good relations with Erdoğan. I know the press is angry that I like Erdoğan, but I do, and he likes me, and we have had no problems." Expressing that Turkey has done what no one else could do in Syria, Trump remarked, "Erdoğan is a very strong and smart man. He did something that no one else could do (in Syria). He deserves credit."
Responding to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's statements that "Turkey has problems in Syria," Trump said, "I think I can solve every problem you have with Turkey (regarding Syria). (Pointing to Netanyahu) As long as you are reasonable; we both need to be reasonable on this issue." Trump added, "I have a very, very good relationship with Turkey and its leader, and I believe we can solve this problem. I don't think this will be a problem right now."
