U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the upcoming case in the Supreme Court regarding whether he has overstepped his authority with the tariffs is a "matter of life and death."
"A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH FOR OUR COUNTRY"
Trump made a statement on social media regarding the issue. In his post, he said, "The case to be heard tomorrow in the U.S. Supreme Court is literally a matter of life and death for our country." He continued: "If we win, we will achieve tremendous but fair financial and national security. If we do not win, we will be almost defenseless against other countries that have taken advantage of us for years. Our stock market is constantly reaching record levels, and our country has never been respected this much. A large part of this is due to the economic security provided by tariffs and the agreements we negotiated thanks to these tariffs."
THE TARIFF CASE HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE SUPREME COURT
The U.S. International Trade Court ruled that tariffs based on reciprocity exceeded the authority granted to the President under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) regarding the regulation of imports. The Trump administration appealed the decision in the Federal Appeals Court, and after the appeals court found most of the tariffs illegal, they applied to the Supreme Court, seeking a swift reversal of the decision.
The Supreme Court accepted the government's request for a quick decision in the tariff case. The Court, which allowed time for oral arguments, stated that the case would be heard in the first week of November.
