In a tragic incident in Brazil, two social media influencers lost their lives after refusing to wear life jackets, claiming it would prevent them from taking selfies and tanning. The event occurred in an area known as the Devil's Throat when an overcrowded boat was caught by a massive wave.
A group that included 37-year-old Aline Tamara and 27-year-old Beatriz Tavares had organized a party on a luxury yacht on September 29. After the party, the influencers split into two groups to return to shore, and one of the captains stated that he had to take 6 passengers on his 5-person boat.
According to Sao Vincente police commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino, the influencers refused to wear life jackets, believing it would affect their photo shoots and tanning. The overloaded boat capsized when it was hit by a large wave.
Aline, a mother of one and a non-swimmer, and model Beatriz lost their lives in the incident. Beatriz's lifeless body was found in the sea, while Aline's body was recovered a week later at Itaquitanduva Beach.
One of the survivors, Vanessa, said, "No one could see anyone in the water. I held onto the rocks with a life jacket to survive," while another survivor, Camila, stated, "There were very strong waves. We didn't know how to swim. I swallowed a lot of water and injured my foot. As a last resort, we threw ourselves onto the rocks."
The police are investigating whether the deaths were due to preventable negligence or an accident. It was reported that before the tragic event, Aline had shared her last bikini photos on the boat, and Beatriz had been modeling since childhood.
