US' Pelosi Reaches Japan On Last Leg Of Controversial Asia Tour

04.08.2022 17:12

US House speaker lands in Tokyo as furious China shows off military might around Taiwan after her contentious visit.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Japan on Thursday, the last leg of her controversial Asia tour.

She flew to Tokyo from South Korea, where she met her counterpart Kim Jin-pyo in Seoul and had a phone conversation with President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Pelosi reached Japan two days after she became the most senior US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, drawing China's fury and leading to the launch of military drills around the self-ruled island that Beijing views as a "breakaway province."

Earlier in the day, Japan claimed at least five ballistic missiles fired by China towards Taiwan fell within its exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan.

Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said it was "the first time that a ballistic missile belonging to the Chinese military" had landed in the area, terming it a "grave issue that concerns our country's national security and the safety of the people."

Tokyo has lodged a protest with Beijing over the incident, Kyodo News reported.

According to Pelosi's office, she will hold high-level meetings in Japan to address "shared interests," including trade, the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis.

The US House speaker started her 4-nation tour of Asia from Singapore on Monday, followed by a stop in Malaysia before flying to Taipei. -
