US President Donald Trump said, "The attack on Beirut this morning should not have happened, especially on this special day when we are so close to a peace deal with Iran. There should be no more Israeli attacks anywhere in Lebanon."
Israel renewed its attacks on Lebanon amidst discussions of a potential agreement between the US and Iran to end the war.
ISRAEL BOMBARDS BEIRUT
The Israeli army bombed the Dahiyeh area in southern Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, without prior warning despite the ceasefire. Two explosions were heard in the area, and smoke rose from the targeted locations. According to Lebanon's official news agency NNA, an attack targeting an apartment in the Gubayri district of Dahiyeh killed 3 people and wounded 15. The attack caused material damage to nearby buildings.
TRUMP REACTS TO ISRAEL: IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED
US President Donald Trump reacted to Israel's attack. Claiming that an opportunity for lasting peace has emerged in the region, Trump emphasized that all parties should avoid steps that increase tension.
"The attack on Beirut this morning should never have happened, especially on this particular day when we are so close to a peace agreement with Iran," Trump said, adding that the attack should not disrupt this important process. Trump stated, "We are very close to an agreement that will bring peace to the region, including Lebanon, and all parties must step back. There should be no more Israeli attacks anywhere in Lebanon, nor should there be further attacks against Israel by other parties, including Hezbollah. This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace. Let's not ruin it."
IRAN: NEGOTIATIONS MAY HALT IF ISRAELI ATTACKS CONTINUE
Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and Head of the Negotiating Team, reacted to the US, saying, "Israel's attack on southern Beirut shows that the US either lacks the will to fulfill its commitments or the ability to do so." Stating that the "bad cop good cop" game is outdated, Qalibaf warned that the negotiation process could halt, saying, "If you lack the will and capacity to fulfill your commitments, it is not possible to talk about continuing the (negotiation) process."
