US Top Court Denies Halting Trump Tax Record Turnover

22.02.2021 19:12

Supreme Court order marks major defeat for former president who has long resisted making his tax records public.

US Supreme Court rejected Monday halting the turnover of former President Donald Trump's tax records to Manhattan's district attorney in the state of New York.

This marks the second time that the US' top court has refused to block a grand jury subpoena for Trump's records. The Supreme Court rejected Trump's argument in July that he is immune from grand jury investigations.

While the court's latest order is a major defeat for Trump, it is a victory for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., a Democrat, who has been trying to obtain Trump's tax records for years as part of his investigation.

Although it is not mandatory for US presidents to share their tax records with the public, and most did so in the past, Trump has long resisted releasing his tax records for the public view.

A US appeals court in Manhattan ruled in October that Trump must turnover his tax records to a New York prosecutor, but the president refused to do so by claiming his taxes cannot be investigated, nor he can be charged, while he sat at the White House.

Trump has bank accounts in at least three different foreign countries, one of them in China, which he highly criticized over the years, according to a report in October.

Trump's foreign bank accounts are held under corporate names and that is why they do not appear on his public financial disclosure forms, according to the New York Times report. -
