Voting Begins In Honduras Presidential Polls

12 presidential candidates compete in presidential elections.

Voting began on Sunday in Honduras as presidential elections kicked off in the Central American country.

Twelve candidates are vying for the top post, with more than 5 million voters registered to take part in the polls to elect the president, as well as three vice presidents, 128 deputies in the National Congress, 20 deputies in the Central American Parliament, and 298 local mayors.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) said in a statement that voting started at 7 a.m. local time (1300GMT) at 5,735 voting centers across the 18 regions of the country.

The army and police took extensive security measures to ensure the safety of the elections.

Sitting President Juan Orlando Hernandez's second term in office will come to an end on Jan. 27.

Xiomara Castro from the Liberty and Refoundation Party, Nasry Asfura from the National Party of Honduras, and Yani Rosenthal from the Liberal Party of Honduras stand out in the polls. -
