AFAD announced the magnitude of the strong earthquake in Istanbul via social media. The earthquake, which was determined to have its epicenter in Silivri, was felt with a magnitude of 6.2 at 12:49.
The first earthquake occurred off the coast of Silivri in Istanbul around 12:13, with a measured magnitude of 4.0 and a depth of 16.3 kilometers.

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür evaluated the series of earthquakes that occurred in the Sea of Marmara. According to AFAD data, two earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.9 and 6.2 occurred in the Sea of Marmara.
Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated after the first earthquake, "At around 12, a 4.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Silivri. The earthquake is on the Kumburgaz Fault zone. This fault is a locked fault, accumulating energy. It occasionally produces small earthquakes. The location is significant; we must be careful. The Kumburgaz Fault is under stress."
