The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration has increased water tariffs. With the new regulation, a 15% increase has been applied to the second tier, which covers water consumption of up to 10 cubic meters, and a 25% increase has been applied to the third tier, which covers consumption between 11 and 20 cubic meters. The new rates will be effective starting from May.
The Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (İZSU) decided to increase water and wastewater tariffs. The decision was accepted by a majority vote in the general assembly. Members of the AK Party and MHP voted against it.
15% INCREASE IN WATER PRICES
In the city where prices were increased twice, by 45% in June 2024 and by 30% in January 2025, a further 15% increase was made for the second tier covering water consumption up to 10 cubic meters with the new regulation.
VALID FROM MAY
According to the new tariff that will be effective from May, İZSU stated that subscribers in this tier would be affected by the increase by a maximum of 11% based on their usage amount. It was noted that the proportion of subscribers in this tariff accounts for 49% of the total subscribers in İzmir. The increase decision was influenced by rising input costs, especially electricity. On the other hand, there was no change in water consumption between 0-4 cubic meters.
"İZMİR IS THE 7TH BEST CITY IN LOSS AND THEFT RATE"
Speaking at the general assembly meeting, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Council Vice President Dr. Zafer Levent Yıldır emphasized the value of water and highlighted the importance of conservation. Yıldır stated, "98% of Istanbul's water needs and 99% of Ankara's water needs are met by surface waters. In İzmir, this rate is 35%. We need to think about this. We place great importance on conservation in every aspect. Based on İZSU data, İzmir is the 7th best city in terms of loss and theft rate. Our efforts regarding conservation will continue in the future," he said. CHP Group Vice President Altan İnanç also stated that water is as valuable as gold and emphasized the need for a comprehensive fight against drought.
25% INCREASE IN THE 3RD TIER
Additionally, according to the new tariff, a 25% increase was made for the 3rd tier covering usage between 11-20 cubic meters, and a 35% increase was applied to the 4th tier, which includes consumption of 21 cubic meters and above, based on usage rates.
It was reported that the rates for businesses would also change with the implementation of the new tariffs. Accordingly, there will be no increase in water tariffs for small businesses with a consumption of 0-4 cubic meters, which accounts for 54% of business subscribers in İzmir, and the increase rates for other tiers in businesses will be the same as those for residential subscribers.
