Denizlispor, which has competed in the Süper Lig for many years and left a mark on Turkish football with its achievements in the UEFA Cup during the 2002-2003 season, has been relegated to the Denizli Super Amateur League due to a 6-point deduction received 7 matches before the end of the season, as a result of financial and sporting issues.

The green-black team, which made a name for itself in Turkish football with its results in European cups for a period, has struggled to maintain its position in the leagues in recent years due to economic difficulties, transfer bans, and point deductions.

Denizlispor etched its name in Turkish football history with its performance in the UEFA Cup during the 2002-03 season.

The green-blacks advanced to the last 16 by eliminating France's Lorient and Czechia's Sparta Prague in the tournament. The Denizli representative faced the strong club Inter from European football, and although they lost 2-0 away, they managed to win 3-0 at home in Denizli, but were eliminated from the tournament on goal difference.

Having spent 21 seasons in the Super League, Denizlispor stood out as one of the stable teams in Turkish football, especially in the early 2000s, and drew attention with the results it achieved in matches at Denizli Atatürk Stadium. The increasing debt burden and management issues in the club negatively affected sporting success in the following years.

Relegated from the Super League in the 2020-21 season, Denizlispor bid farewell to the 1st League in the 2022-23 season. The green-black team was relegated from TFF 2nd League to BAL last season.

After its farewell to the Super League, the club faced transfer bans several times due to the debts owed to former players. Building its squad largely with young players developed from its youth academy, Denizlispor did not achieve the desired results.

THEY FELL FROM HERE TOO

After former player Tiago Lopes, who could not collect his receivables from Denizlispor, won the lawsuit he filed against the club, the green-black team received an additional 6-point deduction. This season, Denizlispor collected 14 points on the field in BAL, but after receiving a total of "12 points deduction," it fell to 2 points. Even if Denizlispor wins all its remaining 7 matches, it lost its chance to stay in the league due to point deductions. The Aegean representative will compete in the Denizli Super Amateur League next season.

"OUR GOAL IS TO RAISE DENİZLİSPOR BACK UP"

Denizlispor President Süleyman Urkay told AA reporter that the club needs to be restructured. Urkay argued that the club's problems are "more related to management philosophy than league level," and stated:

"I clearly stated in a meeting with fans before I became president. This club has been consumed; it needs to be rebuilt. Denizlispor's problem is not whether it is in BAL, super amateur, or another league. The real need is to achieve an institutional structure that is managed with a correct production philosophy and can generate its own income. I do not see myself as a failure. My goal is to rebuild Denizlispor with different values and different management principles. When I took office, there were only 8 children left in the youth academy, aged 8-9. We are currently trying to establish a strong youth infrastructure again. Our goal is to raise Denizlispor back up with a strong youth infrastructure and institutional structure. It is not realistic to expect the problems that have developed over 20 years to be solved in a few months; this is a process. We will gradually carry the club back to its former strong days by restructuring it with a new understanding."
