While the earthquake storm in the Aegean Sea continues, alarming images have been recorded in three of our cities. In Silivri, Istanbul, the sea receded by about 150 meters, creating small islets. In Seferihisar, Izmir, the seawater moved 200 meters away from the shore, causing boats to run aground. Similar images have also come from Muğla, raising concerns among the citizens.

For two weeks, a series of earthquakes has been continuing in the Aegean Sea. While people are being evacuated from Santorini Island, the area has been declared a state of emergency.

THE SEA RETREATED 150 METERS IN SILIVRI

As it is wondered whether Turkey will be affected by the earthquake storm, concerning images have come from three of our cities. In Silivri, Istanbul, the Sea of Marmara has retreated approximately 150 meters. With the retreat of the sea, small islets have formed. Striking scenes were revealed in drone footage. The retreat of the water, despite the rainfall, has unsettled the citizens.

"THERE'S NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF"

Prof. Dr. Doğan Yaşar, a member of TÜBA's Environment, Biodiversity, and Climate Change Working Group, stated that a very strong north wind began on February 4 in İzmir, saying, "Due to the strength of the north wind, the sea level has started to gradually decrease. This event we are experiencing has no connection with Santorini and the earthquakes occurring there. This is an event we occasionally see in February and March. We saw it in 2021 and 2022 as well. The north wind blows very strongly from north to south, pushing the water southward. Since the water is piled up southward from the Marmara, all shallow areas become exposed. The retreat starts first in Dikili. Right now, the water level here has decreased by approximately 40-50 centimeters, and it will continue to drop to 70-80 centimeters by Tuesday, but there is nothing to be afraid of. It is a normal natural event," he said.

SIMILAR SCENES IN MUĞLA AKYAKA

In the Akyaka neighborhood of Ula district in Muğla, the sea water has receded 12 meters inland. After the 12-meter retreat of the sea water, citizens recorded those moments with their mobile phones.

"THERE IS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN THE EARTHQUAKE STORM AND THE RETREAT OF THE SEA WATER"

Doç. Dr. Ceyhun Özçelik, the director of the Geographic Information Systems Center at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University and a faculty member in the Department of Water Resources, explained that it is incorrect to establish a connection between the earthquake storm on the tourist island of Santorini in the Aegean and the retreat of the sea water, stating that there is no scientific study in the literature indicating a connection between earthquakes and the retreat of sea water.
