Who is Nizar Amedi, elected as the President of Iraq?

The presidential election in Iraq has concluded, and in the second round of voting held in parliament, Nizar Amedi received 227 votes to become the country's new president. Amedi, who took office as the 6th president of the post-2003 era, has a career that began with an engineering education and was shaped by critical roles he held during the terms of Jalal Talabani and Fuad Masum, and most recently during his tenure as Minister of Environment.

WHO IS NIZAR AMEDI? 

Nizar Muhammed Said, known as Nizar Amedi, was born in 1968 in the Amedi district of Iraq. Amedi completed his education at the Faculty of Engineering of Mosul University, graduating in 1993.

POLITICAL AND BUREAUCRATIC CAREER

Amedi stepped into politics by serving in Jalal Talabani's secretariat office before the year 2000. He later held significant positions as the Director of the Presidential Office (Private Secretary) during both Talabani's and Fuad Masum's terms.

Serving as Iraq's Minister of Environment from 2022 to 2024, Amedi is also responsible for the Baghdad Office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Political Bureau.

The new president is preparing to take on a key role in Iraqi politics with his long-standing state experience.
