President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave remarkable messages about Turkey's representation in the Alliance as NATO Deputy Secretary General on the way back to the country after the NATO Summit in the US. Erdogan answered journalists' questions and made evaluations on the plane on his return from Washington, the capital of the US, where he visited to attend the NATO Heads of State and Government Summit. WILL TURKEY BE GIVEN A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN NATO?Erdogan was asked about the issue of NATO Deputy Secretary General, recalling that Huseyin Diriöz served as Deputy Secretary General between 2010-2013 and Tacan İldem served between 2016-2020, "We know that you requested a Deputy Secretary General for Turkey in the meeting with the new NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. What is his view on this, will it happen, and if it does, is there a designated name?" Erdogan replied to the journalist's question, saying, "I clearly stated in the press conference I held after the NATO Summit. Neither I nor our Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan make this decision. We have conveyed our request on this matter to them. Mr. Rutte had said that he would come to Turkey before the handover. If this visit takes place, we will discuss these issues with him again." "IT IS NORMAL FOR TURKEY TO BE REPRESENTED IN SUCH A POSITION IN THE SECRETARIAT STRUCTURE"Saying "We are one of the most important countries in NATO," Erdogan stated, "We are making valuable contributions for the Alliance to stay together and maintain its effectiveness. It is normal for Turkey to be represented in such a position in the Secretariat structure. Indeed, Mr. Rutte also expressed that such a position would be suitable for Turkey. We want a person from our country to be appointed as Deputy Secretary General not only for the representation of our country in that position but also because we believe that it will contribute greatly to NATO in these delicate times."
