While claims were circulating that former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş would be released on October 8, a noteworthy statement came from the DEM Party. In a written statement regarding the Kobani events that took place from October 6 to 8, 2014, the Central Executive Board said, "The freedom of Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ, the Kobani prisoners, and all political prisoners must be ensured as soon as possible."

Former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş's lawyers had applied for his release before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision becomes final on October 8. Demirtaş's lawyer Mahsuni Karaman stated that if the government does not appeal, the ECHR decision will become final and will be binding for his release. According to claims in the corridors, the government will not appeal the decision, and Demirtaş will be released on Wednesday. Following these developments, a statement was also made by the DEM Party.
In a written statement regarding the Kobani events that took place on October 6-8, 2014, the DEM Party Central Executive Board noted:
"We respectfully commemorate our citizens who lost their lives in solidarity actions with Kobanî against the attacks of ISIS gangs, and we reiterate our call for the truth to be revealed. It has been 11 years since the protests known to the public as the 'Kobani events' that occurred on October 6-8, 2014. During these events, a total of 54 of our citizens lost their lives, including 47 HDP members and voters.
"NO PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN THE INVESTIGATION PROCESSES"
Despite countless calls to uncover the forces behind the deaths that occurred on October 6-8 and bringing the issue to the Parliament's agenda at every opportunity, the HDP's calls have been left unanswered, and parliamentary investigation motions have been rejected by the votes of the ruling party's deputies. Many of our citizens detained during this period have been sentenced to heavy penalties. However, no progress has been made in the investigation processes regarding our citizens who lost their lives during the events.
On the other hand, a Kobanî Conspiracy Case has been opened against politicians, including former HDP Co-Chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, as well as our friends who are members of the Central Executive Board. Throughout this trial, which began in 2021, our imprisoned friends have not been the ones on trial but rather the ones judging, expressing the truths in the clearest manner at every hearing.
"407 YEARS AND 7 MONTHS IS A BILL FOR DEMOCRACY"
As a result of years of sham trials, a total of 24 of our politician friends have been unjustly and unlawfully sentenced to 407 years and 7 months in prison. 407 years and 7 months is a bill for democracy. The sentences given are based not on a legal foundation but on baseless accusations, coerced or fabricated witness statements, and statements, calls, and explanations within the limits of democratic politics. Therefore, these unjust and unlawful sentences have been imposed on the right to democratic politics.
"PEACE CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED IF THE TRUTH OF KOBANÎ IS CONFRONTED"
Exactly 13 months after the end of the Kobanî Conspiracy Case, which lacks legal legitimacy, a 32,000-page reasoned decision has been announced. This reasoned decision has also shown that the Kobanî Conspiracy Case was orchestrated and concluded from beginning to end for political motives. However, we know that peace can only be achieved if the truths in the Kobanî file are not covered up but clarified in all aspects and confronted with the Kobanî reality.
One of the cornerstones of the Peace and Democratic Society Process, which began a year ago and created great hopes among our 86 million citizens, is the elimination of the judicial club aimed at democratic politics and the release of our politician friends. This will be an important milestone on the path to democracy and peace.
"THE FREEDOM OF ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS MUST BE ENSURED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"
In the decision announced by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on September 17, it was requested that the necessary actions be taken regarding the ECHR's decisions on Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ, and that our friends be released. After the reasoned decision was announced in the Kobanî Conspiracy Case, the ECHR reiterated in its decision on Demirtaş announced on July 8, 2025, that the trial was unlawful and called for the release of Demirtaş and other detainees. This decision must become final on October 8, 2025. The freedom of Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ, Kobanî detainees, and all political prisoners must be ensured as soon as possible.
In such a period where the Peace and Democratic Society Process is being built, as a requirement of genuine and social peace, our friends who are being tried in the conspiracy case must regain their freedom; the truth regarding the events of October 6-8, 2014, must be revealed in all its dimensions."
