Denmark has decided to include women in the compulsory military service system in order to increase the number of soldiers in its army. With the new law passed in the Danish Parliament on June 11, all women who turn 18 on July 1, 2025, will be subject to a lottery system alongside men.
WOMEN INCLUDED IN COMPULSORY MILITARY SERVICE LOTTERY SYSTEM
According to the current law in the country, military service is compulsory for men over the age of 18, but not all men are called up for service due to the sufficient number of volunteers, and selection is made through a lottery method. Until now, women could only join the army voluntarily. With the new regulation, women will also be included in the compulsory military service and will be subject to the lottery system.
THERE ARE 9 THOUSAND PROFESSIONAL SOLDIERS IN THE COUNTRY
With the new law, the duration of compulsory military service will be extended from 4 months to 11 months. Those conscripted will receive basic military training for the first 5 months, and will participate in operational drills for the following 6 months. In Denmark, which has a population of 6 million, there are currently 9 thousand professional soldiers. The country aims to recruit 6,500 new soldiers into the army each year until 2033.
With this step, Denmark has become the third country among the Scandinavian nations to include women in compulsory military service. Previously, Norway included women in the compulsory military service system in 2013, and Sweden did so in 2017. Denmark's reform is seen as part of efforts to strengthen its defense capacity in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the increasing military expenditures of NATO countries.
