Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez defeated American Ann Li 2-1 in the Wimbledon tournament and advanced to the second round.
ZEYNEP SONMEZ'S OPPONENT IS AMERICAN ANN LI
Zeynep, who entered the season's third Grand Slam tennis tournament in London, England, from the main draw and is ranked 51st in the current world rankings, faced world number 29 Ann Li (USA) in the first round.
Ann Li started the match well, taking a 4-1 lead in the first five games. By winning consecutive games and breaking her opponent's serve twice, Zeynep took a 5-4 lead in the 9th game. In the next game, the national athlete failed to convert two set points, lost her serve, and the match was tied at 5-5. Winning the next two games in the set, Zeynep took the set 7-5 after trailing 4-1, going up 1-0.
ZEYNEP WINS THE MATCH THAT EXTENDED TO 3 SETS
Ann Li, who also started the second set well, achieved a 3-0 advantage and comfortably won the set 6-1, leveling the match at 1-1. In the third set, both players started without making service errors, and after the first eight games, the set was tied at 4-4. Winning the next two games, Zeynep managed to win the set 6-4 and the match 2-1.
ZEYNEP AWAITS HER NEXT OPPONENT
Zeynep Sonmez will face the winner of the match between American Claire Liu and Belgian Hanne Vandewinkel in the second round of the tournament. Zeynep had previously won both matches against 28th seed Ann Li at the Merida Open Tennis Tournament, thus defeating her opponent in 3 matches.
