As the first meeting in the nuclear negotiations in Oman, which brought the US and Iran back to the table after 8 months, concluded, a new sanction decision targeting Tehran was announced from Washington. In a statement from the US Department of State following the end of the talks, it was stated, "We are imposing sanctions on 15 entities and 14 'shadow fleet vessels' connected to Iran's illegal trade in oil and petrochemical products. These targets have been used to finance the regime's malign activities."
While the military tension between Iran and the USA continues to raise security concerns in the region, the USA has decided to expand its sanctions against Iran.
DECISION TO SANCTION 15 ENTITIES AND 14 VESSELS LINKED TO IRAN'S OIL TRADE
The US Department of State announced that various entities and vessels related to the trade of Iranian oil and petroleum products have been added to the sanctions list. In the statement from the Department of State, it was stated, "The Department is imposing sanctions on 15 entities and 14 'shadow fleet' vessels linked to the illegal trade of Iranian oil, petroleum, and petrochemical products. These targets have been used to finance the regime's malign activities. Instead of investing in the welfare of its own people and the crumbling infrastructure, the Iranian regime continues to finance destabilizing activities worldwide and to increase repression within the country."
EMPHASIS ON TRUMP'S "MAXIMUM PRESSURE" POLICY
In the statement accusing the Tehran administration of attempting to violate sanctions against the country, it was said, "As long as the regime continues to generate oil and petrochemical revenues to finance its repressive practices, support terrorist activities, and proxy elements, the USA will continue to hold both the Iranian regime and those cooperating with it accountable."
The statement also referred to the "maximum pressure" policy of President Donald Trump's administration, stating, "The President is determined to reduce the Iranian regime's illegal oil and petrochemical exports."
INDIRECT IRAN-US MEETING HELD IN OMAN
The timing of the announcement of the sanctions decision, following indirect talks between Iranian and US delegations held in Oman, drew attention. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described his contacts as a "good start," while Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi stated that the meeting was "useful in clarifying the thoughts of both Iran and America and identifying potential areas for progress." No statement has yet been made by the USA regarding the meeting.
TRUMP HAD THREATENED BEFORE THE SUMMIT
Before the critical summit in Oman, US President Donald Trump, who had issued another threat against Tehran, stated that Tehran was negotiating with them because they did not want to be hit by Washington. In a speech at the traditionally held National Prayer Breakfast, Trump explained that they were strengthening the US military further, saying, "We are negotiating with Iran. They are negotiating because they do not want to be hit. They do not want us to hit. We showed our bombers to Iran."
