The International Football Federation (FIFA) is planning a historic change regarding penalty shootouts. According to the new regulation, if the goalkeeper saves the penalty, the game will not continue, and the decision will be a goal kick. This change aims to prevent yellow cards issued for violations in the penalty area and on the line during penalties.
The International Football Association (FIFA) is preparing for a revolutionary change in the rules of the game. The implementation of the change awaits the approval of IFAB, the rule-making body of football.
IF THE GOALKEEPER SAVES, THE GAME WILL NOT CONTINUE
According to the new regulation, there will be a significant change in penalty kicks. From now on, if the goalkeeper saves the penalty, the game will not continue; regardless of the direction of the ball, the decision will be a goal kick. This will also prevent yellow cards shown for violations in the penalty area and line violations during penalties.
INFANTINO AND COLLINA SUPPORTED THE CHANGE
It has been learned that FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Referee Committee Chairman Pierluigi Collina are also in favor of the change. The new rule is planned to come into effect in the 2026-2027 season.
DOUBLE CONTACT RULE IS ALSO CHANGING
A new regulation is coming for double contacts that occur during penalties. Goals scored as a result of an unintentional double contact by the player will now be considered valid. How these radical changes will affect the dynamics of football is already a major topic of curiosity.
