FIRST THEY BEAT, THEN THEY OPENED FIRE
The incident occurred near 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis. A video shared on social media showed about 8-10 ICE officers struggling to detain a person they had forcibly brought to the ground. In the video, while some ICE officers were beating the individual with punches and kicks, a single gunshot was heard first, followed by 9-10 more gunshots.
THE WORDS OF THE PERSON FILMING ARE STRIKING
As the detained person lay motionless on the ground, the person filming could be heard expressing anger, saying, "Damn, they killed another one, are you kidding me?" Eyewitnesses speaking to local media reported that the person shot in the chest was taken to the hospital by ambulance after receiving CPR.
DIED
Tricia McLaughlin, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, stated in a written statement to the Associated Press (AP) that the person shot was carrying a firearm with two magazines and that investigations into the incident were ongoing. The Department of Homeland Security also released a photo of a gun that was said to have been found on the person shot. A hospital record obtained by AP indicated that the person shot was a 51-year-old man who had died.
GOVERNOR TO TRUMP: MINNESOTA'S PATIENCE HAS RUN OUT
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made a post on social media regarding the incident. Walz stated, "This morning, I spoke with the White House following another horrific shooting carried out by federal agents. Minnesota's patience has run out. This is disgusting." He urged Trump to end the operations of ICE police, saying, "Thousands of violent, untrained officers must be pulled out of Minnesota. Right now."
TENSIONS CONTINUE
While more than 100 protesters gathered at the scene chanting "ICE out," tensions continue between federal ICE teams and the protesters. Video shares on social media show ICE police using tear gas against the protesters.
A WOMAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN HER VEHICLE
On January 7, in Minneapolis, ICE officials shot and killed 37-year-old American citizen Renee Nicole Macklin Good in her vehicle during operations targeting immigrants. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed that the individual attempted to "run over" ICE officers and hit them with her vehicle.
