Due to drought, the planned water cuts implemented in İzmir will be carried out every 3 days instead of every 5 days starting from August 22. Some neighborhoods in Menemen have also been added to the new plan.

The planned water cuts, which are implemented every 5 days in the central districts of İzmir, will be carried out every 3 days starting tomorrow, and it has been reported that some neighborhoods in the Menemen district have also been added to the plan.

RESERVES ARE DECREASING EVERY DAY

In a statement made by the General Directorate of İzmir Water and Sewerage Administration (İZSU) through the social media account of the US-based X company, it was noted that a change was made in the cut-off plan starting from August 22, taking into account the measured water consumption values and remaining water reserves during the drought-related water cuts.

WILL CONTINUE UNTIL AUGUST 31

The Water Council established within the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality İZSU General Directorate announced that partial water cuts would be implemented between 23:00 and 05:00 starting from August 6 due to the drought and decreasing water resources experienced in the city. In a statement made by İZSU on August 19, it was stated that the planned water cuts would continue until August 31.

THE SITUATION IS DIRE IN ISTANBUL AND ANKARA AS WELL

In Istanbul, the dam filling rate was around 55% last August, while it has dropped to 44% this year. Istanbul has less than four months of water left. In Ankara, the situation is even more alarming. The dam filling rate, which was 39% last year, has fallen to 19% this summer, while the actively usable water rate is only at 8.5%. It is stated that the current stocks in the capital will not last even four months.

THE DAMS IN BURSA, TEKİRDAĞ, AND UŞAK HAVE DRIED UP

In Bursa, the Nilüfer Dam has completely dried up, and only 35 days of water stock remains in the Doğancı Dam. The Naip Dam in Tekirdağ has also completely emptied as of August. In Uşak, the Küçükler Dam, which provides drinking water to the city, has dried up, and the city is trying to survive with wells.

WATER LEVEL IN THE DAM IN EDİRNE HAS DROPPED TO 1%

In Thrace, the usable water level in the Kadıköy Dam in the Keşan district of Edirne has fallen below 1%. The municipality has taken action to urgently open new wells.

As of August 12, the active filling rate of dams in Turkey has decreased to 42%. During the same period last year, this rate was approximately 53%. The situation is even more critical in the dams in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia; some dams have completely dried up.

EXPERTS ARE WARNING

According to meteorological data, rainfall in the Marmara Region in July was 95% below normal. The overall decline across the country has reached 71%. Experts indicate that inadequate water management and infrastructure deficiencies, along with climate change, have deepened the crisis.

Environmental organizations and academics emphasize that short-term savings are essential, while long-term infrastructure investments and a thorough review of water management policies are necessary.
