The file of Gülizar Aydın, who had been sought as missing in Aydın since 2012, has been re-examined by the Department for Investigation of Unsolved Crimes. After DNA samples taken from the unidentified female corpse found dismembered on the Muğla-Aydın highway 14 years ago matched with DNA taken from her son, the horrific truth came to light, and the husband, a murder suspect, was arrested.
In the investigation conducted by the Söke Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the forensic medicine report regarding the female body found dismembered on December 2, 2012, on the Muğla Milas-Aydın Söke highway, whose identity had not been determined for years, was announced. The report of the İzmir Forensic Medicine Institute dated August 14, 2026, confirmed that the body belonged to Gülizar Aydın, who had been sought as missing for 14 years.
No news had been received from Gülizar Aydın, born in 1971 and residing in the Akçakonak neighborhood of Söke district, since December 2, 2012. Gülizar Aydın officially began to be sought as a missing person following her son's application on October 31, 2017. In order to determine the person's fate, a case file was opened by the Söke Chief Public Prosecutor's Office under investigation number 2017/7288, and a special working group was formed by Söke JASAT detectives.
14-YEAR TRACE INVESTIGATION AND MURDER SUSPICION
In the field, intelligence, and digital trace investigations conducted by the working group since 2012, no indication was found that Gülizar Aydın was alive. Thereupon, considering that the person might have been killed, the investigation focused on murder suspicion. In the research, it was determined that Gülizar Aydın's legally wedded spouse, Selami Aydın, separated from Aydın after her disappearance, lived in different provinces for approximately 14 years, never filed a missing person report about his wife, and cut off all contact with her family.
Within the scope of murder suspicion, records of unidentified bodies in surrounding provinces were examined. As a result of these studies, it was determined that on December 2, 2012, when Gülizar Aydın disappeared, a dismembered female body was found on the Muğla Milas-Aydın Söke highway, and its identity could not be determined since that day.
SPECIAL DEPARTMENT DIRECTORATE STEPPED IN
With the establishment of the Department of Investigation of Unsolved Crimes under the General Directorate of Criminal Affairs of the Ministry of Justice on April 24, 2026, the case was re-examined. In the deepened studies carried out under the coordination of the Söke Chief Public Prosecutor's Office; the suspect spouse Selami Aydın's HTS records belonging to the incident period, base station data, vehicle movements, and witness statements were scrutinized. In technical examinations, it was determined that Selami Aydın was in the region where the body was found on the date of the incident.
SPOUSE SELAMİ AYDIN ARRESTED
Acting on the gathered concrete evidence, the teams took the suspect Selami Aydın into custody on June 11, 2026, in an operation at his address in İzmir. The suspect was arrested on June 12, 2026, by the judicial authorities on suspicion of "intentionally killing his spouse" and was sent to Söke Closed Penal Institution.
THE MOST CRITICAL DEFICIENCY WAS RESOLVED WITH DNA MATCH
In order to eliminate the most important concrete evidence deficiency in the investigation, the Söke Chief Public Prosecutor's Office applied to the İzmir Forensic Medicine Institute on June 15, 2026, requesting a DNA comparison between the samples taken from Gülizar Aydın's family and the body.
As a result of comparing the DNA sample taken from Gülizar Aydın's son, Burak Zülam, with the samples from the unidentified body found in 2012, a full match was achieved in terms of mother-son relation. With the forensic medicine report dated August 14, 2026, it was confirmed that the dismembered female body belonged to Gülizar Aydın, and the 14-year-old mystery was unraveled.
