53 prisoners escaped from the Kutacane Prison located in the Aceh region of northwest Indonesia. According to local authorities, the incident occurred on the morning of March 10 during breakfast time.

According to eyewitness accounts, the prisoners began to escape by breaking the main gate of the prison with a sudden movement while they were lining up for breakfast. Security camera footage shows the escaping prisoners running over the prison roof, passing through the nearby market, and jumping over the vendors' stalls.

In a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, it was reported that 21 of the 53 escaped prisoners either surrendered voluntarily or were captured in organized operations. The other 32 prisoners are still being searched for as of Wednesday.

Aceh Regional Prison Director Ahmad Rizal stated in a press release that one of the factors leading to the escape was overcrowding: "Kutacane Prison has a maximum capacity of 100 prisoners, but currently, there are 368 people inside. This situation creates serious problems in terms of both security and living conditions."

A large-scale search operation has been launched in the area. The local police chief called on the public to report any information about the escaped prisoners to the nearest police station. It has been learned that an administrative review has also been initiated regarding the prison administrators and staff as part of the investigation.

In recent years, similar escape incidents have occurred in Indonesia due to overcrowding and poor conditions in prisons.
