99-year-old Ohioan Georgia McGarry finished high school 81 years later that she left during World War II. McGarry, who received her 1944 diploma at a special ceremony last week, stated that this achievement meant a lot to her. McGarry had dropped out of school in 1943 due to her family's needs. Working as a pharmacist and janitor over the years, McGarry always held onto her dream of finishing high school. Her friend Marie Adams, who was aware of this dream, contacted the school district to organize this surprise. On the day of the ceremony, McGarry, who thought she was going to a dinner, was brought to the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District building. There, she was presented with her diploma by Principal Phil Ackerman. McGarry also received a gown and cap. Thanks to an exception in the Ohio Revised Code, McGarry was given a diploma dated 1944 instead of 2024. This exception covers women who left high school to join the workforce during the war. Principal Ackerman emphasized that this event showed that it is never too late to achieve goals. McGarry receiving her diploma at the age of 99 became an inspiring example for everyone. McGarry, who will turn 100 in a few months and still lives in Woodsfield, expressed that she will savor this long-awaited success. This story once again highlighted the importance of lifelong learning and pursuing dreams.
