According to documents presented to the court regarding the incident, a witness stated that they saw smoke coming from the apartment and asked the suspect what she was doing. According to the witness, Chesser simply replied "nothing" before taking her dogs out and locking the front door.



Concerned about the fire spreading, the witness entered through the back door and tried to extinguish the burning rags and debris in the bathroom area. At that moment, it was noted that Chesser was sitting motionless and unresponsive on a chair in the backyard of the house.

Police released security camera footage showing the clothes Chesser was wearing on the night of the murder.
