Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that the long-sought drug trafficker Luis Vera Fernandez has been captured in a police operation. Fernandez is known to be the brother of former FARC leader Ivan Mordisco and had been wanted for over 10 years.

IVAN MARDISCO'S BROTHER

President Petro emphasized that the captured individual is the brother of Ivan Mordisco, the leader of the Central General Staff of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). A statement from the police reported that Fernandez, who had been living in a single-story house in El Penon and had an arrest warrant against him for over 10 years, was captured in the police operation.

A REWARD OF 1 MILLION DOLLARS HAD BEEN OFFERED

Fernandez is accused of drug trafficking, kidnapping, illegal financing, and establishing logistics networks in the southern part of the country. On the other hand, the government had promised a reward of approximately 1 million dollars for the capture of Ivan Mordisco.

ATTACKS

On August 21, an attack was carried out with a bomb-laden truck near the Marco Fidel Suarez Military Air Base in the Cali city of the Valle del Cauca administrative region. In the attack, 7 people lost their lives, and 70 were injured. On the same day, after being attacked by a drone in the rural area of Amalfi in the Antioquia administrative region, 13 police officers on board a helicopter that crashed lost their lives. Authorities held Ivan Mordisco, the leader of the Central General Staff, responsible for the attacks.

The EMC, led by Nestor Gregorio Vera, known as "Ivan Mordisco," has never participated in the peace agreement between FARC and the state and is also known as the so-called "General Staff" of FARC. According to the national press, the EMC has more than 3,500 members, including 2,180 armed individuals, and finances itself through drug trafficking, smuggling, and extortion in western, central, and eastern Colombia, as well as in Venezuela and Ecuador.
