Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu faces a request for imprisonment ranging from 9 months to 4 years and 1 month due to his insulting statements directed at two public prosecutors who demanded his arrest on March 23 for "aiding the PKK armed terrorist organization."

An indictment has been filed against Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested and removed from his position as mayor due to a corruption investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), with a request for imprisonment ranging from 9 months to 4 years and 1 month for the crime of "insulting a public official due to their duty."

2 PROSECUTORS INCLUDED AS "COMPLAINANTS"

In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Press Crimes Investigation Bureau, 2 public prosecutors were included as "complainants." The indictment recalled that İmamoğlu was referred to the peace criminal court with a request for arrest after his statement was taken at the prosecutor's office within the scope of the investigation conducted for the crime of "aiding a terrorist organization" on March 23.

"EXCEEDED THE LIMITS OF THE RIGHT TO DEFENSE"

It was noted that an investigation was initiated due to İmamoğlu's insulting statements directed at the two public prosecutors whose names were mentioned in the arrest request during his interrogation at the court. The indictment, which included İmamoğlu's statement to the court, claimed that his statements exceeded the limits of the right to defense and were of a nature that would offend honor and dignity.

İMAMOĞLU'S STATEMENT WAS TAKEN VIA SEGBİS

The indictment stated that in the investigation conducted for the crime of "insulting a public official due to their duty," İmamoğlu, who is detained at the Marmara Closed Penal Institution, gave his statement via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS). İmamoğlu, who does not accept the accusation, claimed that he did not insult the families, private lives, or honors of individuals, but rather criticized on behalf of the public.

In the indictment, it was requested that İmamoğlu be sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 9 months to 4 years and 1 month for the crime of "insulting a public official due to their duty," and that the provision of Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code, which stipulates "deprivation of certain rights," be applied. The indictment was accepted by the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance.
