A.A. (22), who caused a forest fire by launching a flare in Beykoz, was arrested.
The fire broke out yesterday around 21:05 in the forested area of Çiğdem Neighborhood. According to allegations, a flare was launched into the area. With the fall of the flare, a fire broke out in the forested area. Upon notification, a large number of firefighters, police, and municipal teams were dispatched to the scene. The fire was extinguished quickly by the intervention of the firefighting teams before it could spread. Approximately 500 square meters of area was damaged in the fire. During the teams' work, it was determined that the flare was launched from a point on Sarıkaya Street in Çiğdem Neighborhood, located across from the burned area. The teams detained A.A., who resides at the mentioned address.
"MY SISTER SAID 'I'M CURIOUS ABOUT THIS FLARE'"
A.A., who was taken into custody and brought to the police station, stated the following in his testimony: "Due to my father's work on a ship, I knew that the flares would be present on every ship, and I heard that the expired signal flares were renewed and the old ones were distributed. One of them was brought home by my father about 6 months ago. On the day of the incident, around 20:50, my sister said, 'I'm curious about this flare.' From the videos I watched on the internet, I saw how it was used. I took this material and pulled the string of the top cover, and the material exploded, rising from the balcony we were on to an unmeasurable height. It was on fire, and I thought it would extinguish where it would land and would not cause any harm, but the flare landed in the area across from our house where the fire incident occurred.
"I CALLED 112 6 TIMES"
The flames grew in that area. I called 112 six times. They said that they were dispatched to the scene of the fire incident. I couldn't see the scene clearly, but I could hear their voices and sirens. We intervened with a fire extinguisher at the fire site, and when we left the scene, the fire had decreased. My intention here was not to intentionally start a fire. I regret it."
HE WAS ARRESTED
After the completion of the procedures at the police station, the suspect was brought to Beykoz Courthouse. A.A., whose statement was taken at the prosecutor's office and was referred to the Duty Magistrate, was arrested.
