Citizens swimming in the Mediterranean coasts, especially in Antalya, have been visiting hospitals with complaints of burning, itching, and redness on their skin. According to experts, the rise in sea water temperature to 31 degrees has led to an increase in harmful microorganisms and skin irritation. Complaints have been particularly intensified among those who came into contact with buoy ropes.
Many citizens swimming in the Mediterranean beaches have been visiting hospitals recently due to complaints of itching, burning, and redness on their skin. Experts state that these ailments are caused by the proliferation of microorganisms in seawater due to rising air temperatures.
The Air Reached 45, the Water 31 Degrees
Especially in Antalya, temperatures along the Mediterranean coast are raising alarms. While the air temperature in the city has risen to 45 degrees, the sea water temperature has also reached 31 degrees. This unusual situation has affected the marine ecosystem, leading to a rapid increase in harmful microorganisms.
Citizens Rushed to Hospitals
According to Hafize Korkmaz from Ekol TV, many people who swam in the sea in Antalya sought medical assistance due to itching, redness, and acne-like skin reactions on their bodies. Complaints are particularly more common among children and individuals with sensitive skin.
One citizen described their discomfort as follows:
"After swimming in the sea, I started to feel burning and itching on my body. I developed redness similar to acne on my back and arms."
Warning from the Expert: Beware of Microorganisms
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Gökoğlu, a faculty member at Akdeniz University, pointed out that high temperatures have deteriorated the quality of seawater. Gökoğlu noted that microorganisms proliferating on old buoy ropes and mushroom barriers in the sea can create a burning sensation similar to an electric shock when they come into contact with the skin.
