At the METU graduation ceremony, the banner held by a group of three students contained offensive Kurdish language expressions.

One of the banners displayed at the graduation ceremony of Middle East Technical University sparked controversy. Among them, there was a banner carried by three people, including Ali Yıldız, who graduated from METU with the highest grade. The top part of the banner was written in Turkish as "Since it is an unknown language, then" followed by a profane expression in Kurdish.
