The 3rd Administrative Court in Ankara has cancelled the question due to its incorrectness. The court decided that the question is not suitable for the 8th grade level based on the expert committee's report and that it cannot be expected for students at this level to make interpretations. It is expected that the Ministry of Education will appeal the cancellation decision. If the Council of State also decides to cancel the question, it will be a matter of curiosity whether the scores of 1 million students and their schools will change.
HERE IS THE CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION
According to the answer key announced by the Ministry of Education, the disputed 13th Science question, which is shown with an image consisting of a worker, a board, a floor, a ceiling, and pulleys, and whose correct answer is indicated as option C, was as follows:
In a system used to move a uniformly divided board with the same characteristics and weight throughout, a non-stretchable rope is passed through pulleys attached to the ceiling and the board as shown in the figure. When this rope is held by workers as shown in the figure, the board remains horizontally balanced. In this system, the weights of the pulleys, the bars to which the pulleys are attached, and the friction of the rope are not taken into account. Considering that the board is only horizontally balanced at the initial and final positions in the process of removing it from the position shown in the figure to a certain height by applying the smallest forces, it is known that:
I. The workers started pulling the rope at the same time.
II. The lengths of the ropes pulled by the workers are equal to each other throughout the process.
III. The force applied by the workers to the rope at the initial and final positions is smaller than the weight of the board.
Which of the following judgments are definitely correct?
A) Only III B) I and II C) II and III D) I, II, and III
HISTORY OF THE CASE
In the lawsuit in which student Ali Taha Genç's parents are the "plaintiffs" and the Ministry of Education is the "defendant", it was stated in the petition that Genç is also a student of Science and Art Centers (BİLSEM), has successfully completed his education, and has been preparing for the LGS exam with many additional support programs for a long time.
In the petition, it was recorded that Genç almost answered all the questions correctly in the LGS exam and after the exam, he checked the questions and answers published by the Ministry of Education and realized that the answer to the 13th Science question in the Numerical Section A Booklet should have been option A instead of option C, and therefore the answer was incorrect.
In the petition, it was stated that in order for Genç to be placed in the desired high school, he must answer almost all of the questions correctly, and it was mentioned that "If the incorrect answer is not cancelled and it is not determined that the correct option is A, there will be a serious material and moral damage due to the fact that he will not be able to receive the score he deserves and go to the desired school."
The petition included details about why the question in question should have option A as the correct answer, and it was stated that "It is known that a ranking and the schools to be enrolled change with a single question. In this way, if the exam results are announced, the score and the schools where the client is placed will change, and this situation will cause serious grievances for both the client and other candidates."
