Thousands of people took to the streets in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, against U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to take control of their country.
During their march from the city center to the U.S. Consulate, Greenlanders carried banners, waved their flags, and chanted slogans like "Greenland is not for sale," responding to Trump's increasing threats to take over the territory.

Martinussen stated that despite their claims of wanting to make Greenland better for them than the Danes, they are now being openly threatened.
"WE WILL NOT GIVE UP BEING A PART OF EUROPE" The Greenlandic politician noted that in their country, the ownership of land belongs to everyone and that private ownership is not allowed, referring to Trump's plan to pay island residents $100,000 per person to support joining the U.S., saying, "Even if you offer $100,000 per person, we will not give up free healthcare, free education, and being a part of Europe."

After a meeting of the foreign ministers of the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland in Washington, it was noted that fundamental disagreements continued, and it was recorded that the U.S. had an "open desire to take over Greenland."
The autonomous region of Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, had previously rejected approaches from the U.S. that included the transfer of sovereignty.
Recently, Denmark had called for increased military cooperation in the region with its allies. In this context, European countries had announced that they would send small military units and officers to Greenland.
In response, Trump argued that world peace was at risk in discussions about Greenland, stating that he would impose tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, and Finland because they opposed the U.S. acquiring Greenland.
Trump stated that a 10% tariff would be applied to these 8 European countries starting from February 1, 2026, and that the tax rate would increase to 25% after June 1, 2026, indicating that the rate would remain this way until an agreement was reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland.
