The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) has started preparations for a new digital infrastructure system that closely concerns millions of subscribers. Through the National Smart Meter System (MASS), electricity, water, and natural gas consumption will be tracked instantly on a single platform.

A brand new era is dawning in Turkey's energy and infrastructure services. The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) is preparing to launch a revolutionary project that will centralize bill tracking and consumption data in a single hub.

SMART ELECTRIC METERS TO BECOME THE CENTER

According to a report in Türkiye newspaper; studies conducted by EMRA experts indicate that existing electric meters will be transformed into the center of a common digital infrastructure, where water and natural gas consumption will also be integrated in the future. Once the necessary legislation and infrastructure work are completed, data from water and natural gas meters will be readable directly through smart electric meters.

The National Smart Meter System (MASS), to be established with this innovative step, aims to create a "national ecosystem" by bringing together different brands of meters, modems, and communication software under a common protocol.

SINGLE SCREEN AND APPLICATION CONVENIENCE

The implementation of the common infrastructure will provide citizens with great ease of use. Subscribers will be able to manage their electricity, water, and natural gas consumption through a single application, without needing to switch between different institutions and mobile applications.

The main advantages the new system will offer users are as follows:

  • Real-time monitoring of consumption amounts on a single screen.
  • Easy comparison of past period bills and usage data.
  • Reduction of operational costs by eliminating distribution companies' dependence on a single technology.

HYBRID SOLUTION FOR RURAL AREAS

During the system's installation phase, geographical and technological constraints, especially in rural areas, are also being taken into account. Experts note that some communication challenges may arise in rural areas during the first phase of the project and state that a "hybrid" communication structure is being designed for these regions.

In this context, it is planned to use technologies that transmit data over power lines together with systems operating via radio frequency. It was stated that R&D work continues unabated to develop next-generation communication methods and to ensure the system's seamless integration across the entire country.
