The former president of TÜİK, Birol Aydemir, reacted to the fact that some products in Turkey are excessively expensive compared to abroad, stating that this is not inflation but "robbery." Aydemir particularly pointed out the significant differences in the prices of toys and meat, emphasizing that consumers' purchasing power has been seriously affected.
The former president of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), Birol Aydemir, criticized the significant price difference between the same product in the US and Turkey in a post on his social media account. Aydemir pointed out that a toy sold for 5 dollars in the US is sold for 1,300 TL (approximately 36 dollars) in Turkey, stating, "This is really hard to comprehend. This is not inflation, it's robbery."
THE GAP IN TOY PRICES
The price difference highlighted by Aydemir shows that consumers in Turkey have to pay approximately seven times more for the same product compared to the price in the US. This situation indicates issues in market dynamics beyond inflation.
SIMILAR SITUATION IN OTHER PRODUCTS
Similarly, it appears that some products are sold at higher prices in Turkey compared to abroad. For example, while the price of a kilogram of ribeye steak is 819.90 TL in Turkey, it is around 12.99 dollars (approximately 473.8 TL) in the US.
