Prof. Dr. Naci Görür issued a warning about earthquakes in Çanakkale. Görür stated, "The ground in Çanakkale is weak. Do not deceive yourselves. Each of the faults can produce earthquakes of 7 and above."
The 'Seismicity of Çanakkale and Earthquake-Resistant Çanakkale' conference was held by the Çanakkale Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The talk was attended by Çanakkale Governor Ömer Toraman, Çanakkale Mayor Muharrem Erkek, Chairman of the Gallipoli Historical Site of the Çanakkale Battles İsmail Kaşdemir, Science Academy member Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, and many citizens. Before the conference, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made evaluations regarding the earthquakes occurring in the Aegean Sea.
NACİ GÖRÜR: I DO NOT THINK THE EARTHQUAKES IN THE AEGEAN WILL BE A PROBLEM FOR OUR COUNTRY Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who stated that there is an earthquake every half hour in the South Aegean, said, "Most of the time, the earthquakes are of magnitude 4. Occasionally, they exceed 5. The last significant earthquake was of magnitude 5.3. This is related to the plate movements around our country. The reason for the earthquake storm we see in the Aegean today is the subduction of the African plate beneath the Anatolian and Aegean plates, the tension in the upper Anatolian plate, and the lava rising to the seabed. This can evolve and develop significantly, which could disturb Anatolia. However, I do not think such a situation will occur. Because such earthquake storms have happened before. They continue for a certain period and then stop, and I believe the earthquakes in the Aegean will be like that. If it causes very large earthquakes, it could lead to the collapse of very weak buildings near the coast and cause tsunamis. Otherwise, I do not think there will be much of a problem. AFAD and our government have taken the necessary precautions. The mayors there have identified areas that could be affected by tsunamis and have warned the public. Precautions have been taken," he said.
"THERE IS NO VOLCANIC ACTIVITY" Speaking about the potential effects of an eruption on the island of Santorini in Greece, Prof. Dr. Görür continued: "Let’s assume that a volcano is erupting. It sends ash and lava kilometers into the sky, spreading around. Sometimes it blocks the sunlight in the atmosphere. It becomes so dense. If you consider the chemical properties of this dust cloud, it is very harmful to humans. It affects people's health in terms of respiratory issues. I do not think such an eruption will occur. There are no signs that such a volcano is active. If a volcano is going to erupt, it shows signs of this activity over a certain period. Research is conducted to predict when a volcano will erupt and what it will carry. There are no such signs. The earthquakes occurring underwater are a different matter. There is no volcanic activity. There is no volcanic activity on the surface."
Prof. Dr. Naci Görür "IT IS HAPPENING SOLELY DUE TO CLIMATOLOGICAL REASONS" Prof. Dr. Görür stated that the earthquakes are not related to the withdrawal of the sea, saying, "First, there is an earthquake. When an earthquake occurs, it shakes and collapses. In the meantime, a warning is given that 'there may be a tsunami.' The sea level recedes after an earthquake, a warning is issued, and then the sea level starts to rise. Right now, there is no earthquake. The sea has receded. There is no withdrawal related to an earthquake that would make us suspect a tsunami. Today's sea withdrawal is entirely due to climatological reasons. It is due to atmospheric events. In some places, especially wind, storms, high pressure, low-pressure areas, temperature, and coldness, that is, atmospheric events cause the sea to sometimes recede and rise. This has no relation to tectonic movements," he said.
"ÇANAKKALE'S GROUND IS WEAK" Speaking at the conference on 'Seismicity and Earthquake-Resistant Çanakkale,' Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated, "Çanakkale is not an earthquake-resistant city. Efforts can be made to become an earthquake-resistant city. The ground in Çanakkale is weak. Do not deceive yourself. The solid areas of Çanakkale are the mountainous regions in the north and south, where older rocks are found. We are already expecting earthquakes in the North Anatolian Fault and the Marmara Region. You are sitting in between these two branches, on weak ground. Each of these faults can produce earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above," he said.
