The event took place in front of a large crowd.
A woman and her male partner, who were reportedly involved in an extramarital relationship in Indonesia's Aceh province, were each given 100 lashes in a public space. The punishment took place in full view of many onlookers.
YOUNG WOMAN FAINTED
During the punishment carried out in the city of Banda Aceh, an official dressed entirely in brown clothing and a white mask lashed the couple's backs.
In the footage, the young woman was seen collapsing and fainting during the punishment, and she was carried away by officials. The male partner was noted to be grimacing in pain.
SHARIA LAW IS ENFORCED IN THE REGION
In Aceh, the only region in predominantly Muslim Indonesia where Sharia law is enforced, acts such as extramarital relationships, alcohol consumption, gambling, and homosexual relations are punishable by lashing. In January, a couple was sentenced to a total of 140 lashes for consuming alcohol and engaging in an extramarital relationship.
