The recognition of Somaliland, which unilaterally declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, by Israel has ignited a new debate. While many countries have reacted to Israel's decision, international calls have been made to ensure the territorial integrity of Somalia.
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's announcement on December 26 that he recognizes the Somaliland region as an "independent and sovereign state" has ignited a new debate.
DECLARED INDEPENDENCE IN 1991
With this decision, Israel became the only country to recognize Somaliland. Somaliland declared its unilateral separation from Somalia in 1991 but had not been recognized as an independent state by the international community.
EMPHASIZING TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY
Somalia views Somaliland as an inseparable part of the country and emphasizes that all international agreements regarding the region are solely under the authority of the Mogadishu administration.
REACTION FROM TURKEY TO ISRAEL'S SOMALILAND DECISION
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reacted to the statement regarding Israel's recognition of the Somaliland region as an independent state.
Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli stated that Israel's announcement recognizing the independence of the Somaliland region constitutes a new example of the Tel Aviv administration's unlawful actions.
HARSH REACTION FROM ERDOĞAN
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made statements following his meeting with the President of Somalia in Istanbul.
Reacting to Israel's decision to recognize Somaliland, which unilaterally separated from Somalia, Erdoğan stated, "Israel's decision to recognize Somaliland is illegitimate and unacceptable."
