THE ARMY TOOK CONTROL OF THE GOVERNMENT
In Guinea-Bissau, with a population of approximately 2.1 million, a group of soldiers calling themselves the "High Military Command for the Restoration of Order" announced on state television that they had taken control of the government on November 26.
The group cited the attempt of some politicians and a well-known drug lord to destabilize the country as the reason for their decision. One day after the coup, General N'Tam took an oath as the "transitional president."
In the parliamentary and presidential elections held on November 23 in Guinea-Bissau, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who was running for a second term, claimed that he received 65% of the votes according to the count conducted by his team, even before the official results were announced.
Embalo's strongest rival, independent candidate Fernando Dias da Costa, also claimed to be the winner of the election.
Immediately after the statements of both candidates, the military announced that it had taken control of the government.
After being held for a while at the General Staff, Embalo was taken to Senegal last night by a plane sent by the Senegalese government.
