During a press conference in the Oval Office, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that "the best thing he can do is not to buy oil and gas from Russia" regarding President Erdoğan. Following this striking call from Trump, there were consecutive statements from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The world closely followed the 2-hour and 20-minute summit that took place at the White House between President Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump.
TRUMP HIGHLIGHTED TURKEY-RUSSIA RELATIONS
Before the meeting, U.S. President Trump answered questions from reporters in the Oval Office, particularly emphasizing Turkey's ongoing economic relations with Russia.
"I BELIEVE HE WILL STOP PURCHASING OIL FROM RUSSIA"
In the Oval Office, he told Erdoğan, "The best thing he can do is to stop buying oil and gas from Russia." After the meeting, Trump stated that he believed Erdoğan would stop purchasing oil from Russia. However, he did not clarify whether Erdoğan made such a commitment during the meeting.
TWO CONSECUTIVE STATEMENTS FROM RUSSIA
While Turkey did not make any statements regarding the issue, two statements came in quick succession from Moscow. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitriy Peskov made remarks to reporters in the capital Moscow regarding the topics on the agenda.
Commenting on Trump's statements about Russian energy resources during his meeting with Erdoğan, Peskov noted that the TurkStream natural gas pipeline and the Blue Stream natural gas pipeline are operating at full capacity. Peskov stated that Turkey and Russia continue their commercial and economic cooperation, saying, "Turkey is a sovereign state that decides for itself in which areas it will cooperate with Russia." The Kremlin Spokesman added that if Turkey sees certain types of trade in specific goods as advantageous, it will continue to engage in trade in that direction.
"WE RESPECT THE POSITION OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY"
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that they "respect" Turkey's stance and decisions regarding developments in its region. When asked about Lavrov's expectations regarding Turkey's stance following Trump's request for Erdoğan to refrain from purchasing natural gas and oil from Russia, Lavrov expressed that he did not want to "speculate" on this matter. Lavrov said, "However, I want to reiterate what I said about Turkey and our other partners. We respect the position of the Republic of Turkey. We have no doubt that the Republic of Turkey respects itself and its people."
