On election night, Democrats watching the silent CNN broadcast on giant screens initially enjoyed party music played by a DJ, only turning up the sound for Harris's victories in Washington, Hawaii, and Virginia. However, as CNN's John King reported that Harris's chances of victory were dwindling, the DJ's music rose again. As Trump's victory became increasingly certain, some Harris supporters were seen embracing each other. Similar scenes were witnessed at election watch parties across the U.S. and even at the 'Overseas Democrats' gathering in London, the capital of England. Vice President Kamala Harris's election watch party fell silent in the final hours after Trump announced he had won the first swing state. Supporters gathered at Howard University in Washington DC (Harris's alma mater) grew despondent as the Republican candidate's votes increased on the big screens. After campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond took the stage to tell Democrats that their presidential candidate would not be making a speech, many completely lost hope and returned home.
