The Australian government is preparing to impose a 16-year age limit for children to start using social media and hold platforms accountable for complying with it. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese assessed the efforts to introduce an age limit for social media use in a statement to reporters.

"SOCIAL MEDIA HARMS CHILDREN"

Expressing that social media harms children, Albanese stated, "I am putting an end to this." The law that will introduce a 16-year age limit for social media use is expected to be presented to Parliament this year, while Albanese noted that the age restriction will come into effect 12 months after the law is passed.

PENALTIES FOR PLATFORMS VIOLATING THE AGE LIMIT

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, announced that the company will respect the age limit proposed by the Australian government. While the social media platform X did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter, TikTok declined to comment.
