Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan criticized earthquake experts who state that "an earthquake can happen at any moment in Istanbul." Ercan advised those seismologists who frequently use such expressions to "let it go."

In Turkey, a country prone to earthquakes, tremors occur almost every day. With 485 active fault lines, earthquake experts frequently announce risky areas to warn citizens. The comments of geoscientist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan regarding the anticipated major Istanbul earthquake have drawn attention.

"SMILE AND MOVE ON"

In a post on his social media account, Ercan targeted seismologists who often say, "An earthquake can happen in Istanbul at any moment," without naming anyone. In his post, Ercan stated, "If a butcher or a grocer says an earthquake can happen in Istanbul at any moment, smile; if it’s a seismologist who has been saying this for 25 years, smile and move on."

WHOM DID HE POINT TO?

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür warns at every opportunity that the anticipated Istanbul earthquake's footsteps are being heard and that it will be of magnitude 7 or higher. Although Ahmet Ercan did not name anyone in his message, it is believed that he was referring to Naci Görür.

DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN AHMET ERCAN AND NACİ GÖRÜR

The two geoscientists had previously engaged in polemics over the anticipated Istanbul earthquake. Görür, who warns about earthquakes in Turkey almost every day, states that the Istanbul earthquake is imminent. He believes that the earthquake generation period of the Marmara Fault is 250 years and that this period ended in 2016. Ercan had previously said to scientists who claimed, "An earthquake can happen in Istanbul at any moment," "Show me one piece of evidence that indicates an earthquake will happen in Istanbul at any moment, and I will believe you."
