"Allegation of a special position for the dean's spouse at the university."

04.12.2024 10:20

A condition mentioned in the job announcement for faculty recruitment at Çanakkale 18 Mart University has sparked discussions. The inclusion of a thesis prepared by Özlem Akı, the wife of Cüneyt Akı, who became the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences six months ago, in the recruitment criteria has raised allegations of "favoritism."

A detail in the announcement for faculty recruitment at Çanakkale 18 Mart University caught attention. The announcement, which has the same title as the thesis written by Dean Cüneyt Akı's wife, has reignited claims of "Is a position being opened specifically for an individual?"

It was alleged that the announcement referred to Özlem Akı, the wife of Cüneyt Akı, who became the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences six months ago. According to a report by Sözcü, the dean's wife had prepared a thesis titled "Policies for Training Senior Public Administrators in Turkey in Terms of the Digitalization Process." The official announcement also stated that the faculty member to be hired by the university must have "Experience in the Field of Policies for Training Senior Public Administrators in Turkey in the Digitalization Process."

THE CONDITION IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT IS IDENTICAL TO THE DEAN'S WIFE'S THESIS TITLE

It was observed that the condition in the announcement is exactly the same as the title of the dean's wife's thesis. Özlem Akı's husband, Cüneyt Akı, was appointed as the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences on July 26, 2024. Dean Cüneyt Akı's wife had prepared a thesis in 2023 on "Policies for Training Senior Public Administrators in Turkey in Terms of the Digitalization Process."

It was announced that 2 teaching staff and 17 faculty members would be hired at Çanakkale 18 Mart University with an announcement published in the Official Gazette on November 30. The conditions in the announcement sparked a debate over 'individual-specific' hiring.
