According to reports in the Colombian press, 21-year-old María Camila Potosí, who went missing on July 16, had no news for 4 days. During the search launched after her family's missing person report, the young woman's lifeless body was found on the banks of the Meléndez River in the La Buitrera area of Cali on July 20.
BABY REMOVED FROM HER WOMB
In the initial examinations, at least 4 stab wounds were detected on the body of Potosí, who was found to be 8 months pregnant. The most chilling aspect of the brutality was that the baby in the young woman's womb had been removed and was missing.
SUSPECT WOMAN IN CAMERA FOOTAGE SURRENDERED
Police teams deepening the investigation examined security camera footage. Potosí was last seen on July 16 at around 4:16 PM getting on a motorcycle with an unidentified woman who introduced herself as her "friend."
After the woman in the footage was exposed, the suspect's family noticed the situation and the woman surrendered to authorities. The suspect's ex-partner Carlos Rincón claimed that the woman did not come home on the night of the incident and acted as if "nothing had happened" the next day. Rincón also alleged that the suspect woman had previously lied to him twice about being pregnant. It is being investigated whether the woman has a direct connection to the missing baby.
REWARD FOR FINDING THE BABY
While the incident caused great outrage across Colombia, Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder announced that they had increased the reward for solving the case and finding the baby to 200 million Colombian pesos (approximately 63 thousand dollars).
The Colombian Prosecutor's Office continues to investigate this horrifying brutality from multiple angles under the crimes of "forced disappearance," "aggravated torture," "destruction of evidence," and "aggravated homicide."
