An ancient city dating back 3,800 years has been discovered in Peru, connecting the coast, the Andes Mountains, and the Amazon. Named 'Penico,' the ancient city was uncovered after eight years of excavation work and features large and small structures, residential complexes, and ceremonial temples. EXCAVATION WORK LASTED 8 YEARS

The city was uncovered after 8 years of excavation work led by the Ministry of Culture. The discovery of the city took place as part of efforts to understand the earliest pre-Hispanic trade networks, following the Sacred City of Caral, which is considered the oldest settlement in the Americas.

The existence of the ancient city of Penico, located just 12 kilometers from the Sacred City of Caral, corresponds to a period between 1800 BC and 1500 BC, which is almost the same time as the Shang Dynasty in China and the Middle Kingdom of Ancient Egypt.

SHELLS, NECKLACES, AND CLAY STATUES FOUND

So far, various materials have been found in the city, including shells, necklaces made from precious stones like rhodochrosite and chrysocolla, animal bones, and unbaked clay statues depicting human figures, animals, and ritual objects.

REVEALING AN ORGANIZED SOCIETY STRUCTURE

The archaeological materials found in the ancient city indicate that a highly organized society with a constant flow of trade existed.

Archaeologist Mauro Ordonez stated, "According to the research, it has been determined that the city center was established around 1800 BC. This date, when Peñico emerged in all its glory, is significant as it coincided with a crisis period in the city of Caral. Excavations in various buildings have revealed evidence from mountainous regions, forests, and even the coast. This indicates that different groups came to engage in mutual trade during that period, and above all, information exchange was prioritized in these interactions."
