More than 70 former Eurovision contestants from different countries, including Hadise Açıkgöz, who represented Turkey in 2009, signed a letter to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) requesting the removal of Israel from the competition.

"WE BELIEVE IN THE UNIFYING POWER OF MUSIC"

In the letter shared by the UK-based Artists for Palestine Group, the signatories demanded the expulsion of the Israeli broadcasting organization KAN from membership on the grounds that it is "complicit in the genocide in Gaza." The letter expressed discomfort with the use of music to cleanse crimes against humanity, stating, "We believe in the unifying power of music."

"THE RESULTS WERE CATASTROPHIC"

The letter stated, "We were shocked that the EBU allowed Israel to participate while committing genocide live in Gaza last year. The results were catastrophic." The letter included criticisms of the EBU for hosting Israeli participants and delegation members while pressuring artists who protested against Israel, stating that Eurovision 2024 is the most politicized and chaotic competition in history.

"SILENCE IS NOT AN OPTION"

The letter emphasized that in an environment where authoritarian regimes and the far-right are rising globally, artists must raise their voices, stating: "Silence is not an option. Therefore, we unite to demand that the EBU end Israel's complicity in genocide. By allowing Israel to represent itself, the EBU is whitewashing and normalizing the crimes it commits. The EBU demonstrated its power to impose sanctions by expelling Russia from the competition in 2022. We do not accept this double standard towards Israel. We stand in solidarity with this year's contestants and condemn the EBU's avoidance of responsibility."

The signatories, including singers, musicians, and songwriters, called for all EBU members to take action to prevent further discrediting of Eurovision.
