The General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses of the Ministry of Justice made a statement regarding the words of Alev Sezen, the Deputy Chairman of the Felicity Party, who said that the headscarves of women who were arrested for protesting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan over trade with Israel were cut during their entry into the prison. The statement said, "In the interest of the integrity of the investigation, 3 correctional officers have been suspended from duty."
Following allegations that some prisoners had their headscarves cut at the Marmara Women's Closed Prison, the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation, and 3 correctional officers were suspended from duty.
THE GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF PRISONS AND DETENTION HOUSES MADE A STATEMENT
In a written statement from the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses of the Ministry of Justice, it was noted that news reports had been published regarding the allegation that some prisoners at the Marmara Women's Closed Prison had their headscarves cut during their admission to the penal institution, in violation of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations. The following statements were made:
"In the second article of Law No. 5275 on the Execution of Sentences and Security Measures; it is stipulated that the rules regarding the execution of sentences and security measures shall be applied without discrimination based on the convict's race, language, religion, sect, nationality, color, gender, birth, philosophical belief, national or social origin, and political or other opinions or thoughts, as well as their economic power and other social positions, and that no privileges shall be granted to anyone, and that there shall be no cruel, inhuman, degrading, or humiliating treatment in the execution of sentences and security measures. All operations and transactions carried out in our penal institutions are conducted in accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned legislation."
3 CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS SUSPENDED FROM DUTY
The statement included the following information:
"Following the publication of the allegation mentioned above in some media outlets, a controller was immediately assigned to thoroughly investigate the incident, and a judicial and administrative investigation was initiated by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. In the interest of the integrity of the investigation, 3 correctional and protection officers have been suspended from duty. The management of our penal institutions shows the utmost sensitivity to our moral values, and no concessions are made to contrary behaviors."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, while speaking at the TRT World Forum event, President Erdoğan mentioned that 9 individuals who protested by chanting slogans such as "Ships are carrying bombs to Gaza" for a complete halt to trade with Israel were detained on charges of "insulting the President." The protesters were arrested by the court on December 2 for violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations after a 3-day detention period.
